What Does CTE Stand For?

CTE stands for Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy

Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease caused by repeated brain trauma, such as concussions or sub-concussive impacts. Commonly associated with contact sports like football, boxing, and hockey, as well as military service, CTE develops over time, often years or decades after repeated head injuries. CTE is characterized by the buildup of an abnormal protein called tau, which forms clumps that spread throughout the brain, impairing normal function. This leads to symptoms such as memory loss, confusion, impaired judgment, aggression, depression, anxiety, and eventually severe cognitive decline and dementia. Currently, CTE can only be definitively diagnosed postmortem through an examination of brain tissue. Prevention focuses on reducing exposure to repetitive head injuries. Awareness of CTE has grown in recent years, prompting efforts to improve concussion protocols, protective gear, and research into potential treatments.
